Summary
The design, construction and costs of a portable, farm-built, forced-air precooler for fruit and vegetables, known as the Portacooler, are described. The precooler was tested on strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, squashes, tomatoes, apples, and greens on a small farm in Maryland, USA, in 1993 and 1994. Results showed that the market quality of the produce was significantly improved with no loss through deterioration.
