Summary

THE APPLE CULTIVAR < AROMA > SUFFERED SEVERE SOFT SCALD IN 3 OUT OF 4 YEARS WHEN COOLED TO 273 K (0 DEG C) ON THE DAY OF HARVEST OR THE DAY AFTER. IN 1 YEAR, SOFT SCALD ALSO OCCURRED AT 275 K (2 DEG C). TWO WEEKS DELAY IN COOLING ELIMINATED THE PROBLEM ALMOST TOTALLY. A SIMILAR RESULT WAS OBTAINED BY TEMPORARY WARMING OF THE APPLES FOR 7 DAYS, TO 281 OR 285 K (8 OR 12 DEG C), DURING THE SECOND OR THIRD WEEK AFTER HARVEST.
