Summary
An ice slurry is a mixture of fine ice particles and water or an aqueous solution that is used to store thermal energy and transport heat in various fields. When ice slurries are transported by a pipeline, a concern is that the slurries may cause pipeline blockade depending on the flow conditions and the surrounding environment. One of the causes of this blockade is the freezing of an ice slurry due to cooling from the surroundings. Previous studies have investigated the freezing behavior of water and an aqueous solution in a tube, but the freezing behavior of ice slurries has not been studied yet. It is important to investigate the freezing behavior of ice slurries to take measures against such freezing in a pipeline. This study experimentally investigated the freezing behavior of an ice slurry in a rectangular channel with a cooling surface at the bottom. The experiments were performed by varying the ice packing factor of the ice slurry, the temperature difference between the ice slurry and the cooling wall, and the Reynolds number. The frozen layer of the ice slurry grew faster than that of an ethanol solution, and ice particles were incorporated into the frozen layer. The temperature difference and the Reynolds number affected the growth of the frozen layer of the ice slurry.
