State of the art on heat pipe technology in the former Soviet Union.

Author(s) : VASILIEV L. L.

Summary

More than 20 institutions are engaged in R&D in this field in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova. They develop mainly copper-water, aluminium-ammonia, stainless steel-water, stainless steel-ammonia, stainless steel-sodium heat pipes and mild steel-water thermosiphons of high heat transfer performance for terrestrial and space applications. There are many practical heat pipe applications in space and terrestrial programs, for example heat pipe heat exchangers for the heat recovery systems, electronic cooling devices, industrial and domestic heaters and coolers, air-conditioning systems, refrigerators, driers, solar collectors, electric motors. Recently two-phase heat transfer devices, flexible centrifugal and micro heat pipes are successfully used.
