Summary

The USA market for refrigeration products appears to be increasing above pre-recession levels. As well as modest growth in new building construction, domestic and commercial, the huge building stock creates a large replacement market aided now by retrofits to non-CFC refrigerants. This has produced a rise in air-conditioning and heat pump equipment of all sizes. Gas fired absorption chillers have improved their market share. Commercial refrigeration has benefitted from supermarket remodeling. Although glass door frozen food cabinets have lost ground to island and multideck cabinets, they are still the most used. 3- or 4-compressor packages are popular. Many plant owners have still not replaced CFC refrigerants. Output of R11 and R12 is below the maximum allowed under the Montreal Protocol, but substitutes cannot fill demand. Most automobile air-conditioning built in 1993 however has used R134a. D.W.H.
