Steam generating heat transformer.

Author(s) : ARTAMO A.

Summary

An Ahlstrom heat transformer is running since 1991 at Hoogovens Groep BV's steel mill in the Netherlands. The heat transformer recovers heat from the 90 deg C cooling water of the hot strip mill. The heat transformer upgrades the temperature level of the waste heat and produces low pressure steam at 2,7 bar (abs) (130 deg C). Output is 6,5 tons/hour. The working fluid in the heat transformer is a lithium-bromide solution. Anticipated corrosion problems have been successfully prevented with proper selection of materials and corrosion inhibitor as well as by making the unit air tight. The control system maintains a preset distance from the crystallization limit and includes an automatic dilution of the lithium-bromide solution when the heat transformer is stopped. The heat transformer is based on Ahlstrom's patented construction, which is particularly suitable for large size heat transformers and heat pumps.
