Summary

The flesh composition and incidence of storage rots of 2 new Cucurbita maxima cultivars, Kaboten and Hybrid 176, were compared with those of cv. Delica. Kaboten had a lower incidence of rots than the other 2 cultivars (0.7-1.3 vs. 2-6%) after 16 weeks of storage at 12 deg C but there was no difference among cultivars during the critical 6-week field-to-market period for export squashes. After 20 or more weeks of storage, a high proportion of fruits (10-30%) of all cultivars had rots.
