Study on heat and mass transfer with sublimation drying in non-hygroscopic porous media.

Summary

Aqueous solutions (6.2-22%) of sodium chloride were freeze-dried in non-hygroscopic porous medium constructed of river sand with particle dimensions of 350-450 micrometers. Compared with freeze drying of pure water in the sand bed, the drying time is significantly prolonged by the drop of vapour pressure of sublimation front due to the presence of salt. These drying characteristics are different from food counterparts. The results indicate that the salt content should be considered as a primary factor in determining drying time under experimental conditions.
