Study on refrigerating performance enhancement by mixing the carbon fibre in cylindrical heat exchanger filled with MH alloy.

Author(s) : BAE S. C., YABE T., KATSUTA M.

Summary

The study proposes the simple unsteady state method to measure the effective thermal conductivity of the metal hydride (MH) alloy bed. From this measurement, it is confirmed that the effective thermal conductivity of MH alloy bed is extremely low (under 1 W/m.K). The effective thermal conductivities of the MH alloy bed with and without carbon fibre are measured and compared. In the case of MH-2 alloy bed, the effective thermal conductivity when mixing 2wt.% carbon fibre is three times greater than that of the pure MH alloy bed. Finally, a simple refrigeration system model based on the thermal diffusion equation is proposed and the influence of adding the carbon fibre on the refrigerating performance is analysed.
