USING RESISTIVITY, SUSCEPTIBILITY, MEISSNER EFFECT MEASUREMENTS THE AUTHORS SHOW, FOR THE FIRST TIME, THAT LANTHANUM-COPPER OXIDE IS SUPERCONDUCTING BELOW 40 K. THE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY ONSET TEMPERATURE IS 47 K. A CRITICAL FIELD STUDY REVEALS STRONG ANISOTROPY EFFECTS. THE CRITICAL TEMPERATURE T RAISES FROM 37.6 TO 42.4 K APPLYING A 19 KILOBAR PRESSURE. THIS SUPERCONDUCTIVITY APPEARS IN A SEMICONDUCTING STATE HAVING A RESISTIVITY OF 5 OHMS.CM AT T. THE AUTHORS SUGGEST THAT THE LANTHANUM-COPPER OXIDE LAYER STRUCTURE MAKES POSSIBLE THE APPEARANCE OF EXCITONIC SUPERCONDUCTIVITY.
