SUPERCONDUCTIVITY: BISMUTH AND THALLIUM ARE NOW ON THE SCENE.

SUPRACONDUCTIVITE : LE BISMUTH ET LE THALLIUM ENTRENT EN SCENE.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE SITUATION ON THE RACE TOWARDS HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTION IS EXAMINED (PUBLICATIONS ON SUPERCONDUCTORS AT CRITICAL TEMPERATURES HIGHER THAN 120 K). IT IS QUESTIONED WHETHER YTTRIUM AND LANTHANUM BASED COMPOUNDS WILL BE SUBSTITUTED BY BISMUTH AND THALLIUM. THE COMPLEX STRUCTURE AND THE SYNTHESIS DIFFICULTY OF THE LATTER TWO COMPOUNDS, AS ALSO THALLIUM TOXICITY, LEAVES ONE TO BELIEVE THAT YTTRIUM, BARIUM AND COPPER OXYDES STILL HAVE A PROMISING FUTURE.
