Summary

TWO NEW FAMILIES OF COPPER OXIDE BASED COMPOUNDS, DISCOVERED OVER THE PAST MONTHS, HAVE ENABLED ONE TO REVEAL SUPERCONDUCTIVITY CLOSE TO 125 K. THESE COMPOUND CONTAIN NEITHER YTTRIUM NOR LANTHANIDES BUT POST-TRANSITION ELEMENTS, BISMUTH AND THALLIUM. STRUCTURAL STUDIES ON THE BARIUM, LANTHANUM, COPPER OXIDES HAVE LED ONE TO TRY TO SUBSTITUTE RARE EARTHS BY BISMUTH AND THALLIUM IN THESE COMPOUNDS. THE ORIGIN OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY IN THESE COMPOUNDS IS STILL LITTLE KNOWN. A MAJOR DRAWBACK IN THE USE OF THALLIUM COMPOUNDS IS THAT THEIR SYNTHESIS IS DANGEROUS AND TOXIC. IT APPEARS DIFFICULT TO STATE, AT PRESENT, WHAT THE LIMITING CRITICAL TEMPERATURE OF A SUPERCONDUCTOR IS ; PERHAPS BECAUSE OF ITS TRIVALENT COPPER CONTENT. J. V.
