Superconductivity in the quaternary intermetallic compounds lanthanide-nickel(2)-boron(2)-carbon.

Summary

The authors report superconductivity at temperatures up to 16.6 K for these single-phase quaternary intermetallic compounds (where lanthanide stands for yttrium, thulium, erbium, holmium or lutetium). The presence of the 3d transition metal nickel, and the layered crystal structure raise intriguing questions about the origin of the superconductivity, and the relatively high-transition temperatures of these and the yttrium-palladium-boron-carbon superconductor suggest that there may yet be more surprises in store.
