Sustainable cooling schemes for the London underground railway network.
Author(s) : MAIDMENT G. G., MISSENDEN J. F.
Summary
The paper investigates the potential for cooling the underground network and trains using groundwater. It uses a purposely-developed mathematical model to investigate whether sufficient cooling of the existing rolling stock may be provided. The paper initially describes a mathematical model simulating the heat transfer processes taking place in a typical railway carriage. This is then used to investigate the effect of a groundwater-cooling scheme and results are discussed.
