Analysis of energy-efficient cooling systems for the London underground railway network.

Summary

This paper explores the potential for energy-efficient air-conditioning systems. It uses a purposely-developed mathematical model to investigate alternative low-energy cooling strategies for the existing rolling stock. It describes a mathematical model simulating the heat transfer processes taking place in a typical railway carriage and this used to investigate a number of cooling strategies. The results show that alternative cooling methods are feasible. Areas for further work are highlighted.
