System performance of some near-term and long-term R502 replacements.

Summary

A series of tests was done to compare the system performance of four near-term replacements (HP80, HP81, R69S and R69L) and two long-term replacements (HP62 and Klea 61) as potential alternatives for the CFC-containing low-temperature R502. The tests were carried out, using an open-drive reciprocating compressor and counter-flow heat exchangers, at two different condensing temperatures (54.4 and 43.3 deg C), and with varying evaporating temperatures (-30 to -15 deg C). Test data were used to compare important system performance characteristics with R502 including relative evaporator capacity, relative cooling COP, and compressor discharge temperature. The effect of additional liquid subcooling on the evaporator capacity and COP was also evaluated for the long-term replacements.
