Tanks and containers for transportation and storage of liquid hydrogen.

Author(s) : HORN R., LUNDING M., MANZKE H.

Summary

Numerical analyzes of the structural and thermodynamic behaviour of the different tank concepts for liquid hydrogen-transportation have been carried out and are still in progress. Measurements at a scaled down model tank will be used to compare computations and reality and to enable the validation of the models. The main interest will be the extrapolation to the long-term behaviour of the full size tank. Meanwhile a new project started that deals with special 60 m3 tank containers for liquid hydrogen transportation. The exceptional feature of these double hull containers is the material of the outer tank. This European Union project is a joint undertaking between German and Canadian companies. It is hoped to begin a production of these containers in larger numbers in 1997.
