Summary

A thermal simulation program for coil-wound heat-exchangers, SPIRAL, was developed as a part of a total simulation package for base-load LNG plants. The program is based on numerical integration of differential equations obtained from heat and momentum balances. Two different test plants were used, one for measurement of heat transfer and pressure drop on the shell-side, the other for the tube-side. Pure or mixed hydrocarbons were used as test fluid in both plants. The fluid in the shell-side plant was partly evaporated in a test section at down-flow. The test section consisted of one layer of coiled tubes with half tubes on the inner and the outer wall. The two-phase flow was distributed over the entire cross-section by a gravity-drained system. The fluid in the tube-side test plant was partly condensed in a test section at inclined flow. The test section consisted of one coiled tube. Different correlations for calculation of heat transfer and pressure drop were evaluated and compared with the authors' own measurements, both for evaporating fluids on the shell-side and for condensing fluids on the tube-side.
