Test rig for ammonia-based absorption chiller components.

Author(s) : LECUONA A., ROA J., VENEGAS M., et al.

Summary

The paper presents the design of a test rig for components from absorption machines using ammonia solutions. A thermochemical compressor of an absorption machine forms the core of the rig. Main components include: adiabatic absorber, generator, two subcoolers and heat recoverer. Last four components are based on plate heat exchangers. Thermal oil drives the generator simulating a low temperature heat source, below 120°C. Auxiliary equipment include: solution pump, thermal oil reservoir, Coriolis and Vortex flowmeters, PT100 sensors, pressure transducers, valves and piping. The rig integrates an on-line acquisition and control system to allow high quality data throughput. Special attention has been paid to safety issues and the flexibility of the layout, including two reservoirs for solution calibration and control. Experiments to be conducted in the test rig will allow characterizing solutions performance in a wide range of concentrations, temperature and pressure conditions. Two-phase and single-phase heat exchanger flow and performances using the ammonia-based solutions are also evaluated.
