Summary

R123 is suitable for prolonging the life of existing R11 chillers, but is not suitable for use with new chillers. Retrofitting R12-based chillers to R134a is expensive, but can reward the user with a worthwhile reduction in energy consumption. For R22, the use of an HFC-based alternative may be the only safe and viable option for some systems. However, conversion to an HFC refrigerant may result in a significant reduction in system performance, although manufacturers claim that new systems designed specifically for them should have similar (if not better) performance than those systems based on using R22.
