Summary

AFTER NOTING SOME DISADVANTAGES OF OIL IN AN AMMONIA REFRIGERATING CIRCUIT (LOW DISOLVABILITY, HIGH VISCOSITY AT LOW TEMPERATURES, LEADING TO OIL-FILM FORMATION ON PIPE WALLS), THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE A NEWLY DEVELOPED < OIL WASHER >, WHICH KEEPS OIL OUT OF THE CIRCUIT. CONVENTIONAL OIL SEPARATORS CAN ALLOW OIL VAPOUR TO BE ENTRAINED TO THE CONDENSER, WHERE IT USUALLY CONDENSES. THE NEW DEVICE CONSISTS OF A PRESSURE VESSEL AND, UNIQUE IN RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS, A BOOSTED, DOUBLE-PIPE HEAT EXCHANGER. IT IS INSTALLED BETWEEN COMPRESSOR AND CONDENSER. SOME EQUATIONS ARE GIVEN FOR DETERMINING THE OIL WASHER'S MASS FLOW RATE AND THE INTERNAL DIAMETER OF THE PRESSURERECEIVER. M. C.
