THE APPLICATION OF CONTROLLED FLUID MIGRATION TO TEMPERATURE LIMIT AND TIME-TEMPERATURE INTEGRATORS.

Author(s) : MANSKE W. J.

Summary

A SERIES OF LABEL-LIKE INDICATORS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BY 3M COMPANY (USA) THAT CAN PROVIDE A VISUAL RECORD OF TIME-TEMPERATURE EXPOSURE OF THE PRODUCTS TO WHICH THEY ARE ATTACHED. AFTER BEING ACTIVATED, A BLUE COLOUR WILL IRREVERSIBLY MOVE ACROSS THE TAG'S SCALE TO INDICATE A PRODUCT'S TOTAL EXPOSURE TO TEMPERATURES ABOVE A PRESET LEVEL. THE DESIGN OF THESE TAGS IS BASED ON THE CONTROLLED MIGRATION OF DYED FATTY ACID ESTERS THROUGH A BLOTCHING PAPER. A PRECISE AMOUNT OF FLUID IS METERED INTO A SMALL RESERVOIR PAD OF BLOTTING PAPER. WHEN ONE END OF ANOTHER STRIP OF BLOTTING PAPER IS MADE TO CONTACT THE RESERVOIR PAD, THE FLUID WILL PREDICTABLY MIGRATE DOWN THE STRIP AT A RATE DEPENDENT ON THE CONCENTRATION OF THE FLUID AND TEMPERATURE.
