Summary

To prevent global warming, CO2 (natural refrigerant) has attracted attention as an alternative to R134a currently used in automotive air-conditioning systems. The scroll compressor is developed for CO2 automotive air-conditioning systems. The thrust bearing for CO2 scroll compressors will be low confidence and low efficiency because of the large gas thrust force. To achieve high confidence and high efficiency, a static pressure assist bearing was developed and adapted to the CO2 scroll compressor. It is confirmed experimentally and analytically that the CO2 scroll compressor can achieve high efficiency. Elastomer and refrigerant oil were tested for CO2.
