Summary
The disadvantages of the LiBr/H2O solution as working fluid in air conditioning systems are mainly crystallisation, corrosion and low heat transfer coefficient. They continue being a research objective of great interest. Since the year 2004, we have developed three air-water directly air-cooled prototypes: one of them is a solar-driven single effect, another is a fuel-powered double effect and the third is a single-double effect. The latter is built as a single unit. The single and the double effect operation modes are driven by solar energy and by thermal oil respectively, being operational since 2009. Chilled water, at a temperature between 7°C and 18°C, is pumped from the evaporator to the consumption points. The experimental evaluation, performed in daily measurement campaigns of 6 to 9 hours in duration, has confirmed that this solution does not crystallize while operating under extreme conditions such as 44.5°C outside dry-bulb temperature and condensation up to 55°C. The development of a high efficiency absorber, as well as very compact condenser and heat exchangers, has allowed us to build small sized prototypes (0.14 m3/kW). The theoretical basis and several experimental results have been published. We are currently developing an air-air direct expansion split absorption chiller. The cooling power is generated inside the air-conditioned room without any need of chilled water circulating pump. During 2013 summer we have performed some experimental tests as a first step to build a prototype of 4-kW power. The results have been promising. We want to inform about the results and the progress achieved, as well as to claim the use of LiBr/H2O solution that, from our point of view, is the best working fluid for air-conditioning applications.
