Summary

THE EFFECTS OF LONG (3 YEARS) AND SHORT-THERM (6-8 WEEKS) IN VITRO CULTURE ON THE RECOVERY OF CRYOPRESERVED SHOOT-TIP CULTURES OF POTATO HAVE BEEN ASSESSED. BOTH CULTIVARS WERE UNABLE TO SURVIVE CONTROLLED FREEZING IRRESPECTIVE OF THE DURATION OF THE PREFREEZE CULTURE PERIOD, BUT WERE ABLE TO SURVIVE ULTRA-RAPID FREEZING. A LONG-TERM PERIOD OF TISSUE CULTURE BEFORE CRYOPRESERVATION SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED THE ABILITY OF SHOOT-TIPS TO SURVIVE ULTRA-RAPID FREEZING.
