The evolution of compressors and related applications in household and light commercial refrigeration with natural refrigerants.
Number: 0251
Author(s) : ZGLICZYNSKI M.
Summary
Refrigeration and air conditioning industry is facing another significant technological change after the Montreal Protocol of 1987 which initiated phase out of chlorine based CFC and HCFC refrigerants. Reduction of global emissions is the next target of international efforts to mitigate global warming and among them is the phase down of high GWP refrigerants used to replace HFCs with the Kigali Agreement. In reality the return to natural refrigerants started right after the Montreal Protocol Agreement. Many sectors of the refrigeration and air conditioning industry initiated investigations on use of refrigerant from an early period when the vapour compression process was invented in the mid nineteen century. In household fridges German manufacturers were pioneering the application of hydrocarbons. Similar return to the past occurs in commercial systems with use of hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide as refrigerants. Those natural fluids presented right from the beginning several challenges for components designers. This paper will give examples of technical work that was necessary to adapt system components design to natural refrigerants. Compressor being the heart of the refrigeration system is one of them. In particular examples will cover household refrigeration and light commercial applications where the author had direct experience working in a leading global compressor manufacturer Nidec GA - Embraco.
