THE FEASIBILITY OF EXPORTING WOODY ORNAMENTAL PLANTS TO THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE UTILISING SEA TRANSPORT IN ISO REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS.

Author(s) : HEVELDT J. R.

Summary

NEW ZEALAND EXPORTS PLANTS TO ABOUT 15 COUNTRIES, MOST IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE. ALL TRANSPORTATION IS BY AIRFREIGHT, WHICH IS EXPENSIVE. THE NURSERY INDUSTRY HAS A VAST POTENTIAL FOR EXPANSION, BUT LIKE OTHER HORTICULTURAL EXPORTS, COST EFFICIENT TRANSPORT IS ESSENTIAL. FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS, SIMULATED VOYAGES WERE CONDUCTED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF SHIPPING LIVE PLANTS BY SEA. TEST RESULTS ARE GIVEN.
