The greenhouse effect.

L'effet de serre.

Author(s) : MARTIN Y.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The following are examined: 1) the nature of the greenhouse effect since the earth's origins, taking into account CO2-, methane- and CFC-producing systems, the acceleration noted since the beginning of the industrial era, and the "cushioning" and regulating role of the oceans, as well as the difficulty to make predictions; 2) the consequences of the resulting climate change: slight increase in the level of the oceans, particular incidence on semi-arid zones requiring preventive actions; 3) the increasing number of sources of greenhouse-gases emissions; 4) the means for reducing emissions: the author suggests that a tax be imposed on fossil-fuel consumption, which would be the same in all countries.
