Summary

Scanning electron microscopy observations were made on rose stem specimens following a vase life of 2 days. The images show that the cut surface of a rose stem can act as a coarse filter. Only a fraction of the Bacillus cells added to the vase fluid were infiltrated by the sapstream. When aluminium sulphate and Bacillus subtilis cells were added to the rose vase fluid, the cells were covered with an aluminium-compound, thickening the cells, and sticking them to the cut surface. A much smaller fraction of Bacillus subtilis cells thickened with aluminium were able to enter the sapstream. The importance of these observations in the control of vase life of roses is discussed.
