Summary
Stems of Leucadendron var. "Silvan Red" were stored at 1 deg C for 42 days. To test the effect of sucrose pulses, blooms were pulsed at 1 deg C in solutions containing 100 ppm chlorine and different sucrose concentrations. Pre-storage treatment with 2% sucrose and 100 ppm chlorine resulted in a significant (more than 45%) increase in vase life after 42 days storage, whilst pre-storage treatment with 20% sucrose and 100 ppm chlorine resulted in an increase in vase life of 300% Pre-storage treatment with high (20%) sucrose solutions protected Leucadendron blooms from desiccation damage.
