THE LARGE SCALE APPLICATIONS OF CENTRIFUGAL REFRIGERATION UNITS WITH OPEN TYPE PLATE EVAPORATORS.

Author(s) : DELL'OCA A.

Summary

THE MAJORITY OF THE REFRIGERATING PLANT OF MINES ARE INSTALLED ON THE SURFACE WHERE LOWER CONDENSING PRESSURES AND POWER REQUIREMENTS ARE ACHIEVED. HOWEVER A DISADVANTAGE IS THE HIGHER POWER REQUIREMENTS FOR PUMPING CHILLED WATER EVEN IF TEMPERATURE OF WATER IS LOWERED. SHELL AND TUBE EVAPORATORS ACHIEVE CHILLED WATER TEMPERATURES DOWN TO 275-276 K (2-3 DEG C). PLATE EVAPORATORS CAN PRODUCE CHILLED WATER TEMPERATURES DOWN TO 273.5 K (0.5 DEG C) WITHOUT DANGER. CONVENTIONAL WATER CHILLERS ON THE MINES ARE INSTALLED WITH CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS OPERATING ON R12. THE COMBINATION OF CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS WITH PLATE TYPE EVAPORATORS IS DISCUSSED AS A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF PRODUCING CHILLED WATER.
