THE LONG-TERM STABILITY OF RESISTANCE THERMOMETERS FOR TEMPERATURES BELOW 30 K.
Author(s) : BESLEY L. M.
Summary
STUDIES HAVE BEEN MADE OF THE STABILITY OF GERMANIUM, CARBON-GLASS AND RHODIUM-IRON RESISTANCE THERMOMETERS FOR USE IN THE RANGE 1 K TO 30 K. THE THERMOMETERS HAVE BEEN EOSED TO REPEATED THERMAL CYCLING BETWEEN 20 K AND 300 K WITH RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS BEING MADE AT 20 K ON EACH CYCLE. THE RHODIUM-IRON ALLOY THERMOMETERS APPEAR TO BE THE MOST STABLE, ALTHOUGH MEASUREMENTS ON THESE ARE INCOMPLETE. GERMANIUM THERMOMETERS ARE LARGELY RELIABLE AT THE 5 MK LEVEL OF PRECISION AT 20 K, BUT CANNOT BE TRUSTED COMPLETELY FOR PRECISIONS OF 1 MK OR BETTER. CARBON-GLASS THERMOMETERS ARE RELIABLE ONLY AT THE 20 MK LEVEL.
