Summary

OVERALL PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION WAS DOWN IN 1990, THOUGH CHICKEN CONTINUED TO MAKE UP 60 % OF THE POULTRY MARKET. CONSUMPTION OF FROZEN CHICKEN WAS MUCH HIGHER IN EASTERN GERMANY THAN IN WESTERN GERMANY, BUT FOR CHILLED CHICKEN IT WAS THE REVERSE. OTHER, ALL-GERMAN CONSUMER TRENDS ARE NOTED: TOWARD CHICKEN PARTSAND AWAY FROM WHOLE CHICKENS, TOWARD LARGER WHOLE CHICKENS, ETC. MORE THAN HALF OF FROZEN-CHICKEN SALES WERE IN SUPERMARKETS, BUT ONLY A THIRD OF CHILLED-CHICKEN SALES. M. C.
