The ozone layer victim of atmospheric particles.
La couche d'ozone victime des particules atmosphériques.
Author(s) : GRANIER C., BRASSEUR G.
Type of article: Article
Summary
Current investigations and reflections on the possible role of stratospheric aerosols in ozone destruction by means of heterogenous reactions occurring on their surface. This mechanism would increase the effect of chlorinated components released in the atmosphere by CFC decomposition. The authors outline the recent evolution of knowledge on this subject, particularly following the injection of considerable amounts of particles in the atmosphere by violent volcanic eruptions (El Chichon, Mont Pinatubo).
