Summary
THE RESULTS OF A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS ON A REFRIGERATION HEAT RECOVERY UNIT DESIGNED TO PROVIDE 300 LITRES OF 60 DEG C WATER FROM A 2.25 KILOW REFRIGERATION SYSTEM COOLING 2,100 LITRES/D OF MILK ARE PRESENTED. INCREASING CONDENSER PRESSURE CAUSED THE GROSS HEAT RECOVERY TO RISE FROM 15.1 TO 29.2 MJ/M3 DAILY OF MILK FOR A WATER COOLED SYSTEM, WHILE WATER OUTLET TEMPERATURE ROSE FROM 45 TO 64 DEG C. THE CORRESPONDING RANGES FOR THE AIR COOLED CONDENSER WERE 13.7 TO 23.8 MJ/M3 DAILY AND 38 TO 55 DEG C. SUCTION SUPERHEATING INCREASED THE TOTAL DAILY HEAT RECOVERY BY APPROXIMATELY 3.2 MJ/M3, AND WATER OUTLET TEMPERATURE BY 5 deg C. THE NET DAILY HEAT RECOVERY VARIED BETWEEN 13.7 MJ/M3 AT 650 KILOPASCALS, TO 19.1 MJ/M3 AT 1,200 KILOPASCALS FOR THE WATER COOLED SYSTEM. FOR THE AIR COOLED SYSTEM THE NET DAILY RECOVERY REMAINED CONSTANT AT APPROXIMATELY 11.5 MJ/M3. AT 10 CENTS/KILOWATTHOUR, THE HEAT RECOVERY ALS ON A FARM PRODUCING 2,100 LITRES/D, COULD SAVE $ NZ 453 PER ANNUM. SUCH A SYSTEM WOULD COST AROUND $ NZ 5,000, MAKING THE INSTALLATION MARGINALLY UNECONOMIC. HOWEVER, RECOVERY SYSTEMS ON LARGER FARMS ARE LIKELY TO BE MORE ATTRACTIVE FINANCIALLY.
