THE DEVELOPMENT OF FROZEN STORAGE OF RED BLOOD CELLS IS REVIEWED AND FOUR DETERRENTS WHICH ARE ACTING AGAINST FURTHER INCREASES IN THE SCALE OF PRODUCTION ARE DISCUSSED. THE IMPORTANCE OF FROZEN STORED RED BLOOD CELLS LIES IN THE PROVISION OF READILY AVAILABLE RARE DONOR BLOOD FOR PATIENTS ALLOSENSITIZED TO HIGH FREQUENCY ANTIGENS. A SMALL NUMBER OF FROZEN STORAGE DEPOTS WOULD SUFFICE FOR THIS SERVICE. THE VALUE OF FS RBC COMPARED WITH RED BLOOD CELLS DEPLETED OF PLASMA, WHITE CELLS AND PLATELETS BY A SIMPLIFIED PROCEDURE REMAINS TO BE DEMONSTRATED. C.R.F.
