Summary

The article discusses: 1. History and synthesis of the Montreal Protocol: policy CFC and HCFC phase out; production and consumption levels planned in the Protocol. 2. USA regulations: Clean Air Act, 1963 and its six amendments. 3. European Union regulations. 4. Synthesis of the national European regulations. Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Greece and the United Kingdom in some extent, conform to the European regulations; Austria, Germany and Sweden are more restrictive. 5. Italian regulations: analysis of the present regulations. Criteria for a final version of the Italian law regarding the protection of stratospheric ozone. The article includes many tables and diagrams: estimated effect of regulations on the reduction of the use of methyl bromide, CFC, HCFC. Comparison of some European national regulations. Phase out programmes according to the Montreal Protocol and the regulations of the European Union.
