Summary

The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project required a 54-mile long racetrack built in a tunnel 150 feet below ground, virtually filling the Ellis County, Texas location. Centered around the city of Waxahachie, thirty-five miles south of Dallas, the racetrack tunnel was to hold ten thousand magnets, five thousands for each circulating beam, cooled by ten evenly-spaced 16-kilowatt helium refrigerators. In october 1993, the land and tunnel rights were 90% acquired, 14 miles of tunnel had been dug, 5 miles were complete, 50 magnets fabricated, development and test laboratories built, manufacturers selected for the magnets and components, and thousands of contracts placed. The major components of the assets, located in a part of the West campus, five miles west of Waxahachie, are: a Magnet Development Laboratory, Magnet Test Laboratory, Accelerator Systems String Test facility, and three large, integrated, Helium Refrigeration Systems. The challenge, now, is to review initiatives to find new and innovative ways the Center may help business or industry to prosper, or to advance scientific studies. J.V.
