Summary

Gamma irradiation of pure naphthalene single-crystals produces several species of free radicals. the study of absorption spectra at 4.2 K in the region between 540 and 490 nm enabled one to show, for oriented single-crystals that l-hydronaphtyl radical occupies two nonequivalent crystalline sites. The present investigation leads one to conclude that radicals are fully dispersed in crystalline matrix and the sample may be considered as an almost perfect example of an oriented gas.
