Summary

Supermarkets in Japan range widely in size from about 500 to 5000 m2 or more. Supermarkets are the commercial buildings that use the most energy. Lots of supermarkets are about 3000 m2 and use about 1.7 million kWh/y. These supermarkets use the multiplex direct-expansion refrigeration systems and these systems require very large refrigerated charges for their operation. New system designs with -8°C ice storage equipment reduce energy use by 10% and TEWI by 30% or more.
