The tomatometer, an instrument for nondestructive measurement of firmness of tomatoes.

Summary

The tomatometer is an instrument for measuring the firmness of tomatoes and is being developed for application at the auctions in the Netherlands. Samples of 15 tomatoes are placed on a removable rotating disc. Within a few minutes the firmness of all tomatoes can be measured automatically. The tomatometer measures uniaxial compression distance (mm) at a maximum force of 3 N. This measurement reliably reflects firmness and is nondestructive. The tomatometer can be coupled with colour and size measuring equipment results in a complete tomato quality measuring system.
