The use of toxicological data in refrigeration hazard analysis.

Summary
Toxicology is an extremely complex subject but the designers of refrigeration systems need to work with very over-simplified information when co-ordinating the arrangements for health and safety for an installation. There is great scope for the misuse of valid toxicology data through this over-simplification. Erring on one side could result in significant overspend on inappropriate or unnecessary safety measures but an oversight in the other direction might mean that essential safety measures are overlooked. This paper explains the source and meaning of the toxicology values used in refrigeration safety standards, highlighting the different values used for particular assessments. It uses ammonia as a case study illustration and identifies different modes of toxicology that can affect humans exposed to other refrigerants. The paper demonstrates how toxicology information can be used to ensure a safe environment for staff who perform work on the refrigerating system, colleagues who work within the same facility and neighbours who live or work nearby. Additional information on the appropriate use of personal protective equipment in different circumstances is included and the paper concludes with some suggestions for future enhancement of safety regulations and standards.
