Summary
Ventilation of buildings has been of major interest to ASHRAE since its predecessor organization, ASHVE (American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers), was founded in 1894. The author provides a history of ventilation, from ancient times right up to the founding of the ASHVE. He describes ventilation studies through history with which ASHVE was involved, as well as the different ASHRAE standards that have been adopted. Equipment development from the 18th to the 20th century is also presented.
