Theoretical evaluation of the performance of zeotropic mixtures in refrigerating cycles.

Summary

The evaluation of the performance of zeotropic mixtures as working fluids in vapour compression refrigerating cycles raises several problems because the reference temperatures are not clearly defined. As a solution, the paper proposes considering the thermodynamic mean temperature (defined as the enthalpy variation divided by the entropy variation) as the characteristic temperature of two-phase processes; then the potentially better ability of zeotropic mixtures to match the temperature profiles of the external fluids in the heat exchangers can be taken into account. Examples of the practical use of the method are given.
