Thermal contact resistance in plate finned tube heat exchangers: method to predict and analyze contact pressure.

Author(s) : HRNJAK P. S.

Summary

A method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the tube-collar bond for plate aluminium fin-copper tube heat exchangers is presented. In these types of heat exchangers the bond is made by mechanical or hydraulic expansion of the tube. The model assumes thin cylinder walls which are subjected to plastic deformation during the expansion process and then relax elastically to form a bond. Analysis of the influence of different parameters on contact pressure is presented. The model is able to predict which combinations of tube and fin geometry, material and operating regimes will cause low contact pressure which in turns degrades the thermal contact conductivity and overall performance of the heat exchanger.
