Summary
General presentation of the materials used which are distinguished by a multicellular structure containing low conductivity gas bubbles, non-hygroscopic, stability to all attack by, and variation of, the environment; their chemical features vary according to their natural or artificial origin. The natural insulants may be of mineral (asbestos, cellular glass, etc), vegetable (cork, kapok, rubber, foam, etc) or animal (felt, wool, etc) or synthetic origin (plastics). In each case, the essential feature of an insulant is in relation to its behaviour to water vapour migration and condensation, which are discussed in detail. The addition of anti-vapour screens to the insulant is also studied and its results are assessed. Y.G.
