Summary

A numerical simulation was carried out in a typical office building to find the savings in running costs that could be achieved by using thermal storage in an air-conditioning plant, when the charges for electric energy are time dependent. Reference is made to climatic data and energy rates that are common in Italy. The effects of the type of thermal storage (chilled water or ice) on the economic results are investigated. Using a reference day was found acceptable for predicting monthly energy consumption; simplified procedures for evaluating the peak of electric power during different price periods are evaluated.
