The following payback analysis, in US dollars, confirms the cost effectiveness of the project (it does not include the cost of the direct-digital control system, which was provided for under an additional construction budget): gross construction cost, 650,000; value engineering savings, 27,000; net construction cost, 623,000; contribution by power company, 499,800; and net investment by owner, 123,200. In a simple payback analysis, the investment divided by operating savings per year equals years payback (1.23 years).
