Summary

THE STRESSES EXPERIENCED WHEN WATER FREEZES IN A TUBE ARE DIFFICULT TO CALCULATE BECAUSE THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ICE ARE NOT FULLY KNOWN. AN EXPERIMENTAL RIG SET UP TO TEST SIMPLIFIED FORMULAE FOR A ONE-DIMENSIONAL PROCESS GAVE REASONABLE CORRELATION EXCEPT IN REGIONS WHERE CRUSHING OF ICE TOOK PLACE. HERE THE PROCESS UNDERGOES A SUDDEN CHANGE. SOME FURTHER UNDERSTANDING OF SUCH CHANGES HAS BEEN GAINED. D.W.H.
