Thermoacoustic oscillations in superfluid helium filled vertical tube during film boiling regime.

Summary

The authors present some of their experimental results on film boiling heat transfer from an horizontal surface to a superfluid helium II filled vertical channel connected to a thermostatic bath. For large heater area or when edge effects are not negligible, the periodic character of the heat transfer process may induce temperature oscillations of the heater and mass oscillations of the whole liquid in the channel. For some part of the heat transfer characteristic, the vaporized liquid acts as gas spring and a prime mover for the liquid column above it, leading to a net refrigeration effect. A crude modelisation of the gas dynamic behaviour shows a rather good agreement with the experimental data.
